Packing & Processing

Job Description:
Our Packing and Processing team is responsible for sorting, packing, and processing fresh oysters from our farm. You will play a vital role in maintaining quality standards and ensuring efficient operations.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Sort and grade oysters based on size and quality 
  • Pack oysters for shipment following safety and quality standards 
  • Assist with cleaning and maintaining equipment and work area 
  • Follow safety protocols and ensure compliance with health regulations 
  • Support other farm operations as needed

Qualifications: 

  • Previous experience in food processing, packaging, or seafood industry is a plus but not required
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions 
  • Strong attention to detail and quality standards 
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow safety procedures 
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (at least 50 lbs) and stand for extended periods

Farm Hand 

Position Description:

            This farm hand position is a great opportunity for people who want to work outside and in nature. Great opportunities to learn more about oysters and other species as well as how to grow a premium product sustainably. Much of the job duties will be on the water harvesting, sorting, tumbling, and splitting densities. There will also be on land work which consists of culling, sorting, gear work, and line making.

Responsibilities:

  • Farm hands should have a good physical status, competency in swimming, active listing skills, reliability, and a drive for working on the water.
  • When farm hands are on the water, they should have no problem following the farm managers directions.
  • Timely arrival to work
  • Ability to be flexible and shift tasks throughout the day

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAO):

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, at times with little direction.
  • Strong and sound decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in ALL weather conditions.
  • 40 – 50 hours per work week. Time of day is variable.  

Job & Safety Requirements:

  • Must have valid driver’s license with clean driving record to qualify for company insurance policy.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit, stand and/or walk on uneven terrain up to 8 hours per day.
  • The employee may be required to stoop, bend, kneel, twist, and squat 30 percent of the time
  • The employee needs to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. (Regularly required to exert up to 20lbs or force, frequently required to exert up to 50 lbs. of force, occasionally required to exert up to 125 lbs. of force).
  • The vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must have agility and balance to safely climb on machines, boats, docks, etc.

The Aquaculture Pioneers program is launching its fourth year to support the growth of Maine’s aquaculture industry and continue to cultivate talent in this important sector. We thrilled to partner with aquaculture employers in the downeast, mid-coast, and southern regions of Maine. 

The Aquaculture Pioneers Program is a certified internship & pre-apprenticeship program run by Educate Maine. It requires a 10-12 week full-time commitment between the months of May and August and consists of paid on-the-job training, a 2-day introductory bootcamp, an end-of-summer Blue Economy Symposium, and participation in several networking and professional development events throughout the summer. It is designed for those interested in gaining introductory industry-relevant skills and learning more about what it is like to work for an aquaculture farm or business during the busy summer season. 

It is NOT the full one-year, 2,000-hour registered apprenticeship program with 144 hours of related instruction run by the Maine Aquaculture Association. Pioneers hired through this initiative will be enrolled in Educate Maine's Maine Career Catalyst program and will become part of a cohort focused on building skills and their network in Maine’s aquaculture sector.
